Hot weather can cause heritage joinery to dry out, expand unevenly or develop small cracks in paint and timber. During a heatwave, keep rooms ventilated, avoid directing fans or air conditioning straight at historic windows and doors, and check exposed surfaces for early signs of movement. Maintaining sound paintwork and dealing with minor defects quickly can help protect traditional joinery from lasting heat-related damage.

Spring often reveals hidden issues in listed building joinery, from swollen timber and flaking paint to failed seals, rot and movement caused by winter moisture. Heat and sunlight can have a lasting effect on heritage timber windows, causing the wood to expand, contract, fade and dry out over time. Understanding these changes helps property owners protect original windows, preserve historic character and reduce the risk of costly repairs.

Spring is the ideal time to repair heritage windows because milder weather makes it easier to spot damage, treat timber and complete careful restoration before summer heat sets in. Early repairs help protect original features, improve performance and prevent small issues from becoming more serious.

Restoring stained glass windows requires patience, specialist care and respect for the original design.
