Soundproofing is becoming a more common concern in increasingly busy, crowded and noisy urban environments. Sound waves are comprised of energy, vibration and particle movement at a certain frequency – which means that on an unseen level they interact with different materials in different ways. Compared with aluminium and UPVC frames timber tends to sit between the two, with significantly lower protection levels from aluminium and comparable or slightly enhanced soundproofing from UPVC.

Protecting your space from noise pollution involves much more than double glazing – in fact, there are lots of things we can do to enhance the soundproofing properties of your timber windows.

Secondary glazing (also known as double glazing) is a good starting point – as this added layer helps to keep sound out.  Timber windows can be double or even triple glazed, so they are suitable even for inner city properties or properties in locations with higher noise levels such as those near busy roads and airports. Timber frames can also offer enhanced sound protection with integrations like acoustic glass, laminated glass and specialist seals and weatherstripping applications.

Once your windows have been built and installed, there are also some DIY hacks you can take advantage of to reduce noise even further, including heavy blinds and curtains designed to block out or reduce noise and acoustic caulk, which can be applied to plug any gaps or vulnerable areas.

Measuring and assessing noise levels

To determine what measures may be needed to soundproof your home you first need to assess the level of noise you’re dealing with. It’s possible to overspend on soundproofing solutions where a simpler option may have been just as effective. To measure external noise levels accurately, you’ll need a digital sound level meter, which can be inexpensively purchased or hired. Anything at 40 decibels and below is considered quiet, whilst anything coming in at 60 or above is considered intrusively loud. Noise is subjective, though – so if you are particularly sensitive to sound due to a disability or health condition be sure to make a decision that is guided by your own personal preferences, too.  

To get the most accurate result, take readings both indoors and outdoors and compare them to understand how much noise is penetrating through.

There are lots of professional soundproofing solutions available, but it’s worth considering whether these are needed before you take the plunge. You should get a clearer picture from measuring the noise levels indoors and outdoors and determining what impact this has and which areas are a priority for you. It’s a good idea to consider various different solutions first, as a few simple upgrades to your existing window units could save you time and money and offer a relatively similar result.

Soundproofing and energy efficiency naturally go hand in hand – but there are several aspects of soundproofing that might negatively impact upon the environmental credentials of your property which you may want to consider before you take the plunge. There are also options such as vacuum glazing and triple glazing as covered above which support both functions, so you may want to explore these to maximise your budget and efficiency further. Insulation materials that offer soundproofing and energy efficiency include mineral or rock wool, recycled fibreglass and specialist foam products.
